Donald Dowdy

Donald L. Dowdy of Ashville, Ohio passed away February 5, 2012 at OSU Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis Morton Dowdy and Thelma Lucille (Horton) Dowdy, daughter-in-law Cindy Dowdy. He is survived by his wife Sandra (Lucas) Dowdy, and his children Michael (Cathy) Dowdy, Daniel (Wendy) Dowdy, Chuck (Karen) Claypoole, Wendy (Peter) Burmester, grandchildren Danielle, Ryan, Peter, Nate and Christian. He is also survived by a very special cousin, Roy (Wanda) Horton and special friends Mike and Doreen Vaughan. Mr. Dowdy was born September 26, 1932 in Sciotoville, Ohio and grew up in South Shore (Fullerton), Kentucky where he graduated from McKell High School. Following high school he enlisted in the US Navy in which he served four years from 1952 to 1956. After his honourable discharge, he attended Eastern Kentucky University earning his B.A degree and went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Education from Xavier University in Cincinnati. He had a long, successful career in many Ohio school districts. He served as Superintendent of Schools in three different counties and came to Pickaway County in 1980. He retired as Pickaway County Superintendent of Schools in November, 1997. He was president of the Ohio County Superintendent’s Association and member and officer of many other educational organizations. In 1980 Mr. Dowdy joined the local Sertoma Club. He quickly became active in the local and international organization, serving in many leadership positions including the prestigious position of International President. Throughout his lifetime Don dedicated his time to serving his community in numerous civic organizations. His greatest joy was the time spent with his wife, children and grandchildren and the family trips to the ocean. He will be sadly missed by family and friends. Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday February 9, 2012 at the Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
