Dow Owen West went to meet his Lord and Savior on May 18, 2014. He was born in The Plains, OH on August 21, 1924. He is survived by the love of his life for 67 years, Charlotte May (Grattidge) West; son, Charles Logan (Kim) West; daughter, Amy J. (West) Strous; grandchildren, Nathan West, Logan West, Trent Stous and Trisha Strous; great grandson Noah West; sisters-in-law, Garnet (Poling) West and Virginia (Ortman) West and many nieces and nephews. He was the last surviving sibling of the 8 children of John Logan West and Hannah (Davies) West. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Myrtie, Anna Mae and Janie and brothers, Johnny, Carl, Charles (Chod) and twin brother, Dave. Dow was a long-time principal at Logan Elm High School, Assistant Superintendent and classroom teacher. He often said that his position there was a labor of love, the faculty and students were great. Dow was very proud of his 3 years in the U.S. Navy. He served for 1 ½ years in the Pacific during the war while participating in 5 major operations. He made many life-time friendships while aboard the carrier, which he prized highly and have lasted to this day. Dow very much loved playing cards and word games with his wife, Charlotte. He greatly enjoyed touring the U.S. with his wife and children with the R.V. in tow. He was a wood-working enthusiast and worked 2 crosswords every day. The Spanish language was a hobby along with current events and history. An avid fisherman, he spent many years fishing at Dale hollow Lake in Tennessee. Dow spent 60 years as a Mason, past master of Adelphi Lodge #527 and was a member of Laurelville Trinity Church for 65 plus years. Dow received his B.A. from O.S.U., M.E.D. from O.U. and did post-master work at Xavier University. There was no end to Dow’s love for his family. He will be greatly missed. Friends may visit 6-8 p.m. Thursday May 22, 2014 at the Wellman Funeral Home, 1455 North Court St., Circleville and from 10-11 a.m. Friday at the Wellman Funeral Home, Laurelville, Rt. 56, with funeral at 11 a.m., officiated by the Dr. Doyne Wiggins. Interment with full military honors by Amvets Post 2256 will follow at Green Summit Cemetery in Adelphi. Memorial contributions may be made to Logan Elm Education Foundation, 9575 Tarlton Rd. Circleville, OH 43113.
