Carlos Barriere Alvarez, MD, died at his home in Circleville on Friday, March 11, 2011. He was 85.

Dr. Alvarez was born in Chicago on January 17, 1926, the son Dr. Ramon Alvarez and Mina Barriere Alvarez. He grew up in Mexico, graduating from the University of Mexico Medical School in 1949. He pursued graduate studies in the U.S. at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and completed his residency in sUFgery at the. Chesaspeake and Ohio Hospitals in Clifton Forge, Virginia and Huntington, West Virginia.

He opened his surgical practice in Circleville in 1959 and resided in Circleville until his death. He served on the staff at Berger Hospital for 40 years.

Dr. Alvarez was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. He was a member and past president of the Pickaway County Medical Society, past president of the medical staff at Berger Hospital, and a member of the Ohio State Medical Association and the Columbus Surgical Society. Until his retirement, he was a member of the American Medical Association. He served as Medical Director of Pickaway Manor Care Center from 1970-1995.

After retirement, he served as a volunteer visiting scholar in human anatomy at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He also worked as medical technical advisor to the Ohio Department ofJob and Family Services.

He was a member and past president of the Circleville Rotary Club; a member of the Pickaway County Historical Society and the Pickaway County YMCA, an avid golfer at the Pickaway Country Club and an active parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jacqueline Shelton Alvarez, and his children Gloria (Dean Gulick) of Houston, Texas; Jacqueline (Sharon Stevenson) of Corvallis, Oregon; Carlos of Columbus; and Matthew (Eleanor Rhee) of Raleigh, NC. Grandchildren include Ashley Caitlyn Alvarez, Lucia and SophidAlvarez Gulick; Stevenson David Alvarez, and Elizabeth, Madeleine and Juliette Alvarez. Surviving siblings are Berta Alvarez de Silva, Ramon Alvarez Barriere and Rogelio Alvarez Barriere of Mexico City. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jorge Alvarez Barriere.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 11:00 am at St Joseph Catholic Church in Circleville with Father Stephen Krile officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph cemetery in Circleville. Friends may call Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 at the Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville with a wake service at 8:00 pm. Family requests memorial contributions to Circleville Rotary Mike Harrison Park Fund or St. Joseph Church.
