James A. Shank, 83, of Circleville, died June 29, 2008 at Pickaway Manor. He was born March 7, 1925 in Pt. Pleasant, WV the son of the late Ernest and Frances (Henderson) Shank. James received a bachelor degree in Agriculture from Ohio University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in WWII from 1943-46 and served in the South Pacific. James retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation where he worked from 1956-84. He was a member of Community U.M.C. where he received the Cross and Flame award for outstanding service to youth in the community and also was awarded Life member award in the United Methodist Men's Brotherhood. James was an active adult leader in the Boy Scouts from 1959 to present. The Boy Scouts were his love and passion as he had two sons and three grandsons achieve Eagle Scout. James was the recipient of the Silver Beaver award which is the highest award given to adult leaders. He is survived by his wife Jane S. (Sanborn) Shank to whom he would have been married 60 years on August 12th; sons Jim (Gail) Shank of Circleville and David (Sue) Shank of Cincinnati; grandchildren Kyle (Brooke), Karrie, Benjamin (Kathryn), Joshua and Evangeline; brother John H. (Anna) Shank of Charleston, WV. Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday July 2, 2008 at the Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville with Pastor Barry Burns officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Community U.M.C. Building Fund.
