John W. Fortner, 88, of Laurelville, died October 1, 2008 in Pickaway Manor. He was born March 22, 1920 in Champaign, OH, the son of Arthur and Florence (Weethee) Fortner. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, member of the First Church of God and worked at VA Hospital for 34 years and operated Fortner’s Greenhouse in Laurelville. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley (Stevens) Fortner; children, James, Marilyn and Richard Fortner; grandson, William Parker; brothers, Harold and Woodrow Fortner and sister, Maxine Horn. He is survived by his children, Naomi (Roger) Schmitt of Richmond, IN, Sharon Nungester of Waverly, John (Judy) Fortner of Thornville, Rebecca (Michael) Poling of Laurelville and Rachel Brown of Westerville; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter and brothers, Paul and Donald Fortner. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday October 4, 2008 at the First Church of God with Rev. Lynn Summers officiating. Burial will be in Green Summit Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville. Memorial contributions may be made to Berger Hospice and First Church of God.
