John Hurd, known as Jack to most, passed away peacefully October 26, 2007 at Grant Medical Center. He was born in Trenton, NJ May 9 1926 to William and Gertrude Hurd. Jack graduated early from Oakwood High School in Dayton. After his graduation in February of 1944, he immediately entered the U.S. Army and was assigned to a base at the University of Kentucky. He was reassigned to the U.S. Army Air Force as a radio operator. On May 9, 1945 he left for Europe as WWII was winding down. In Europe he served as a control tower operator at Valley, Wales. He was headquartered with the 5th AACS Wing in London, England and Wiesbaden, Germany. He was discharged from the military in June 1946 as a Staff Sergeant. He married Doris Moody November 18, 1949 in Chillicothe. Jack was retired from the Defense Construction Supply Center in Columbus. He spent several years as president of the local American Federation of Government Employees labor union. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Amvets. Jack was a volunteer for American Red Cross and was a member of Circleville E.M.S. After retirement John answered the call when there was a dire shortage of substitute teachers and spent many years helping the various schools of Pickaway County. Jack loved to travel and especially loved Yellowstone and Teton National Parks where they visited 39 years, returning just three weeks ago from the last trip. Jack was an avid supporter of anything his children were involved in. He was an officer in the Unioto Athletic Boosters for several years. He gave many years to the Logan Elm Athletic Department, serving as equipment manager for the football team, assistant tournament director for the Logan Elm Wrestling Invitational and was the announcer for many Logan Elm Track events. Jack also worked as clock operator for McDowell Exchange School football games. He was inducted into the Logan Elm Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Flo, brothers William and Robert and sister Wilma. He is survived by his wife Doris; daughter Judy (John) Cook; son Jan (Debbie) Hurd; grandchildren Jamie (Jeremy) Schaal, Holly Cook, Janna (Mark) Sailor, John Cook and Andy (Diane Beathard) Hurd; great-grandchildren Jacob Sailor, Joshua Cook, Jason Sailor, Jude Schaal, Emily and Madison Cook; sister-in-law Betty Cramer and numerous nieces. Jack was a very devoted husband, father, grandpa and a friend to many. Funeral service will be held 7:00 p.m. Tuesday October 30, 2007 at Outreach Ministries Church with Dr. Doyne Wiggins officiating. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be held at later date at Dayton National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Logan Elm Athletic Dept. Arrangements were completed by Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville.
