Lorenzo “Shorty” Dow Thress passed away on June the 5th, 2011 at the age of 84. He was born January 10, 1927 near Nelsonville, OH to Albert and Edith (Skivers) Thress who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his 10 brothers and sisters, Garnet Dicken, Margaret Wollett, Vandaleen Shaw, Arthur, Glenn, Pearlie, Gilbert, George, Jack and Albert Jr. In 1994, he lost his son and best friend, Chris Alan Thress. Shorty proudly served in the US Navy during World War II on the USS Greiner. In September 1948 he married Norma Jean Shaw. They had two children Pamela and Chris. He was a loving, kind, good-humored and quiet man who made his family his number one priority. He worked hard to support them at General Motors in Dayton, OH for 30 years. After retiring from General Motors, Shorty and Jean came back home to Hocking Hills. In 1974, they bought the South Bloomingville farm of Jean’s parents, Mack and Ethel Shaw, and made it their home for the next 37 years, in which time he worked for Old Man’s Cave State Park for 10 years in the maintenance department. He retired for good to keep his lawn mowed and enjoy the quiet and beauty of the woods on their property. He is survived by his loving wife, Norma Jean; daughter, Pamela (Jeffrey) Thress-Herzog; grandchildren, Joshua (Sara) Moon, Logan Moon, Chad (Amy) Thress, Amie (Brian) Williamson; great grandchildren, Kyle & Christopher Hensley and many nieces, nephews and an extended family of friends. His family would like to say a special thank you to Jim & Linda Shaw, Gary, Hart and Buck and Theresa Anderson for all their help and support during his illness. From trips to the doctors to lawn care, to the daily acts both great and small their kindness will never be forgotten. They would also like to thank Fair Hop Hospice for their compassion and support during the last few weeks of Shorty’s life. Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday June 9, 2011 at the Wellman Funeral Home, Laurelville with Pastor James Vandagriff officiating. Burial will be in Green Summit Cemetery.
