Millie Helt May 2, 1935-September 9, 2009
After a long and courageous battle with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Breast cancer and Basal Cell Carcinoma, Millie passed peacefully at home on Wednesday, September 9, 2009.
Millie was born to Mark and Ruby Lois (Bryant) Moore in Somerset, Kentucky, and spent her early childhood in Clarksville, Ohio. She resided in Port Jervis, New York for some time where she met her husband of nearly fifty years, Edward J. Helt, Jr.
They moved to Washington C.H. in 1959 where Millie became well known in the community. She was a waitress and mixologist at Ray Garrity’s Rendezvous, The Terrace Lounge and LaFayette Club. She also was bar manager at the Elks Lodge 129 for several years. She was a member of the Community Players Theatre Group serving as the make-up artist and appeared in several plays. She was employed by R.W. Management Group in Reynoldsburg, Ohio working as apartment complex manager in Ohio, Indiana and West Virginia. Millie earned her Ohio Certificate of High School Equivalence in 1988, and thereafter helped tutor others in their quest for a GED. She served as a devoted volunteer for Hospice of Fayette County for several years. Millie was the Charter President of the Washington C.H. Elks Ladies Auxiliary and member of the Eagles Aerie 423 and American Legion Post 25 Auxiliaries. She was past president of the Washington Firefighters Ladies Auxiliary and was instrumental in all the events and projects. Her personal generosity and willingness to help those in need has touched many in the community and beyond. Millie was the right hand for her husband, Ed, helping with many of his endeavors, such as the Elks Flag Day, American Legion’s Americanism and Government Test and Veterans Day Assemblies at Miami Trace High School.
Millie was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Howard Moore, sisters Ruth Fleeger and Charlotte Haines, and a daughter Patricia Karen Peyton.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Helt Jr., children, Walter Helt, Carolyn (Peyton) Spicer, and Michelle Helt-Fellner, several grandchildren including Chelsea and Maxwell Helt-Fellner, sister, Judy (Houser) Henize, several aunts, nieces and nephews, cousins and many dear friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Helt will be held on Friday, September 18, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. in the Wellman-Kinzer Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Washington Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. at the American Legion Post 25.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8 p.m.
