Ralph was born in Bath County, KY on November 29, 1930. He was born into a rural farming family. Ralph bought his first farm in a partnership with his uncle at age 17 and used the income, along with helping on neighboring farms, to fund his college education. He joined the US Army Kentucky National Guard at age 16. He served as an armored crew member on M4 Sherman tanks initially, and then on to the M26 Pershing tank. He spent 10 years as a student at the University of Kentucky, resulting in the awarding of a PhD in Physical Chemistry in 1958. He was named as a Fullbright Scholar, married, moved to Freiberg, Germany, taught Chemistry for a year at Freiberg University of Mining and Technology. Upon Ralph's return to the United States, he was hired as a Staff Chemist by E.I. DuPont and company. His career at DuPont spanned 35+ years at 4 different locations around the United States. He was responsible for several US Patents while working for DuPont. After retirement, Ralph founded 3 different successful companies and turned them over to the employees when he moved onto other interests. Ralph's last employment was with Columbus State University. He was an adjunct professor and taught mathematics until he retired from a second career. Ralph was active his whole adult life in Freemasonry. He became a 32nd degree under Scottish Rights. He was also an active member of the Boy Scouts of America. He served as an Assistant Scoutmaster to Troop 52, Circleville, while his son was an active scout. Afterwards, he founded a successful Boy Scouts of America Explorer Post that produced many Eagle Scouts. Ralph was also an active member of the Circleville First Baptist Church. Ralph was proceeded in death by his parents, Badger and Margaret Hovermale of Carlisle, KY, and his wife, Barbara. He is survived by his daughter Beth (Linc), daughter Amy (Bernie), and son Dan (Joy). His grandchildren Aimee, Alisha, Claire, Andy, Isabella, Sam, Mitchell, Maggie, Hyden, great granddaughter Camilia and goddaughter, Gabriella. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2025 at noon at the First Baptist Church with visitation from 11-noon. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.
