Richard “Dick” Hartinger, age 87 of Circleville, passed away peacefully at his home on July 20, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer. Dick was born on Janaury 16, 1930 in Dover, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He was the son of Ernest and Vera Ethel (Zimbleman) Hartinger. Dick was a graduate of Circleville High School where he created many fond and special memories with his teammates in football, basketball and baseball. He was drafted into the United States Army, serving with the 14th armored Cavalry Regiment from 1951-1953 where he was assigned to border security on the German and Russian borders. After receiving his Honorable Discharge, Dick returned to Circleville where he married Patricia Ann Leeth of Washington Court House, Ohio on September 13, 1954. Dick was among the first employees hired on June 1, 1954 at the Circleville DePont facility. He remained employed at DuPont until his retirement on January 31, 1987. On the same day he was hired, Dick learned he passed the Civil Service Exam for the Circleville Police Department. He held a deep respect for law enforcement and served with the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Department Auxiliary Unit, retaining his commission from 1956 through 2017. Dick served under Pickaway County Sheriff Charles Radcliff, Pickaway County Sheriff Dwight Radcliff and current Sheriff Robert Radcliff. Dick was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed sports, hunting and fishing. Anyone familiar with Dick knew of his passion for frying fish and for sharing his results at his famous fish fry events. Dick is preceded in death by his wife Pat, his parents and eight brothers and sisters. He is survived by sons, Rick (Cindy) and Tim (Kim) Hartinger, a brother Robert “Pete” (Patty) Hartinger, all of Circleville, a granddaughter Jenna (Dustin) Carter of Galena and grandson Kory (Jessica) Hartinger of Westerville. He is also survived by brother-in-law David (Sally) Leeth, sister-in-laws Carolyn (Larry) Bacon, Jean (Gerald) Burner, Linda (Allen) Garringer, several nieces and nephews and many friends and wonder neighbors. At Dick’s request, cremation will take place and no calling hours will be observed. A private burial service will be conducted for immediate family as Dick is laid to rest beside his beloved wife Pat. The service will be conducted by family friend, Reverend Keith Davis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society or to any organization that supports the youth of our community.
