William Conover “Bill” Lyle, age 80, passed away peacefully at home on September 25, 2014. He was born on January 25, 1934 in New Brunswick, New Jersey to the late Mary Conover Lyle and John Hyer Lyle, Sr. The middle of three brothers, he had an adventurous life, never looking back. With few if any regrets, he tackled life head on, at full steam. He attended Matawan High School, and participated in track, basketball, and was vice president of student council. As a senior in High School, he moved to London, England with his parents, attended school, and spent a summer traveling Europe by train with his older brother. He attended Lehigh University from 1951 to 1955, and was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering. During college, he spent his summers working either on the Lyle Farm in Matawan, N.J. or the Conover Farm in Manalapan, N.J. After graduation, he accepted a position with E.I. Dupont de Nemours Company. He worked for 38 years. His first assignment was in Savannah River, S.C. where he worked as a shift supervisor making radioactive material for the cold war. He subsequently worked at Circleville, OH; Buffalo, NY; Wilmington, DE and a final assignment in Circleville. He earned the respect of his coworkers, and made many friends along the way. He retired in 1993. When in Circleville the first time, he met the love of his life, JoAnne Watson Lyle. They met at a party during the Pumpkin Show in1961. They were married in1962 in Columbus, OH. The couple have three children, William C. “Bill” (Annette) Lyle, Jr., Amy L. (Darrell) Brown, James K. (Rose) Lyle, and six grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel, Caroline, Ellie, Chloe, Reese, and two step grandsons, Nathan and Matthew. He is survived by his two brothers, John Hyer Lyle, Jr., of Prescott, AZ, and Robert Vanderveer (Lois) Lyle of Simsbury, C.T., and countless other nieces, nephews, in laws, and relatives. He will be missed dearly by all. He had numerous hobbies and collections. He was always reading a new book. He enjoyed sailing, basketball, and travelling. He served on the Pickaway County Library Board, the Pickaway Country Club Board, the Pickaway County YMCA Board and numerous committees of Community United Methodist church. He trained hundreds of officials for YMCA competitive swimming in Ohio and West Virginia. He was one of the initial fundraisers and planners for the construction of the present Pickaway County YMCA. He was very proud of his years of service to the YMCA and competitive swimming. The family will receive friends at the Wellman Funeral Home from 4-7p.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2014. Funeral services will be held at Community United Methodist church on Monday, October 6, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.. Following the service a luncheon will be hosted at the church, and internment will be held at Union Cemetery in Columbus at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pickaway County YMCA or Berger Hospice.
